Full of charm and countryside character, our Hedgehog Sculpture is a delightful tribute to one of Britain’s most beloved garden visitors. Hand-forged in steel at our Wolds Farm studio, each piece is carefully crafted to capture the hedgehog’s rounded form, textured spines, and inquisitive nature. Whether nestled among flowerbeds, perched on a wall, or placed near a garden path, this little sculpture brings a touch of warmth and personality to any outdoor space.
Finished in a rustic or weatherproof galvanised patina, it’s designed to age beautifully with the seasons. A perfect gift for wildlife lovers and those who appreciate the magic of the natural world — made with care, to last a lifetime.
A fun and charming garden sculpture, perfect for countryside or wildlife lovers. With earthy tones that blend naturally into outdoor surroundings, this hedgehog sculpture brings harmony and personality to any garden or green space. Hedgehogs are a beloved and familiar part of the wildlife in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Through careful observation and study, Charles has captured their unique form and spirit—bringing each sculpture to life in a way that ensures no two are ever exactly the same.
The creative process begins with a simple, old-fashioned pencil and paper. Charles hand-sketches every design in his studio, focusing on the animal’s movement, posture, and lifelike personality before determining its final scale and proportions. Once the drawing is complete, it is transferred onto a large metal footplate using artists’ chalk. This full-size sketch may stay on the studio floor for up to a week, while Charles edits, refines, and adjusts the lines until the design is just right.
Next, the body outline is hand-bent using 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, carefully following the curves of the sketch. The bare frame is then welded together and stood upright—revealing the true scale of the sculpture and allowing Charles and the team to identify any needed adjustments. To create the hedgehog’s distinctive spiky texture and body form, smaller 6mm or 8mm mild steel bars are hand-cut and bent.
This stage is where the magic happens: as the sculpture is infilled, its structure, movement, and facial features begin to emerge—turning steel into something full of life and character. Once the body is complete, the sculpture moves to its finishing process. We apply a rustic patina using our in-house, all-natural, non-toxic solution—a carefully developed blend that creates a warm, golden-orange tone. This finish matures beautifully outdoors, allowing the sculpture to settle naturally into its surroundings.
