Unique, bold, and brimming with rustic charm — our Horseshoe Stag Sculptures are a striking fusion of rural heritage and sculptural craftsmanship. Handcrafted from individually welded reclaimed horseshoes, each stag is a one-of-a-kind creation that celebrates the strength and grace of this iconic woodland creature. From the impressive antlers to the proud stance, every detail is carefully formed by our skilled artisans at Wolds Farm in the heart of the British countryside.
Available in three-quarter or full-scale sizes, and finished in a variety of natural patinas, these sculptures make a captivating feature for gardens, estates, and entranceways alike. A genuine conversation starter, they beautifully marry traditional farriery roots with contemporary rural design.
With blacksmithing and farriery running through Charles’s family, using horseshoes to create stunning sculptures was a natural choice. Stags and deer being at the heart of Hertfordshire’s and Buckinghamshire’s wildlife, Charles has been able to study, observe, and learn all the necessary characteristics to craft these rugged Stag and Doe sculptures, breathing life into each one—meaning no two are ever the same.
The process begins simply, old-fashioned pencil to paper—this is where Charles’s ideas first take shape. A sketch is hand-drawn by Charles in his studio, imbuing the animal with movement, character, and lifelike qualities before finalising sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once complete, the sketch is transferred by Charles onto a large metal footplate in the studio using artist’s chalk. This chalk outline can remain on the floor for up to a week as Charles carefully edits, alters, and refines the drawing until fully satisfied.
Once approved, the sculpture’s outline is hand-bent from 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, ensuring all curves are precise before being welded together to stand upright. The bare frame is then erected, with each leg correctly positioned, revealing the true size of the sculpture. This is a crucial stage where Charles and the team identify and resolve any imperfections or challenges that may arise.
Each horseshoe is then meticulously cleaned, pressed, hand-bent, and cut to create the muscle definition, depth, movement, and character of the animal. This is where the sculpture truly comes to life. As Charles and his team begin infilling the structure with horseshoes for the body, limbs, facial features, and extraordinary muscle definition, the sculpture’s movement and personality start to emerge, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece.
Once the main body is complete, finer details such as the antlers, mane, ears, and feet are hand-forged—often employing traditional blacksmithing techniques with tools like our 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil to enhance the sculpture’s magic. The antlers are crafted from a single large piece of thick steel bar, heated to an extraordinary temperature, allowing Charles to add depth, detail, and texture using only heat, the anvil, and a blacksmith’s hammer. These techniques contribute to why each sculpture is uniquely individual.
