First Across The Line…
Our Greyhound Running Sculpture. It might not be the greyhound sculpture you expected, but the method behind all our dog and canine sculptures starts with an idea! Charles’s ability to capture the character and lifelike qualities of each breed means these sculptures are perfect to remember, showcase, or keep as a keepsake in any home, garden, or workspace for dog lovers everywhere.
With dogs being a prolific part of our homes and lives worldwide, Charles has studied, observed, and learned all the necessary characteristics to create these stunning dog sculptures, bringing life to each one individually — meaning no two sculptures are the same.
Dog commissions are welcome for all breeds, sizes, and styles.
The perfect sculpture for any dog lover or greyhound racing enthusiast, oozing lifelike qualities and character — a piece to be admired in your home, garden, kennels, or driveway. A wide variety of dog breeds have featured in Charles’s life to date, including Labradors, Cocker Spaniels, Rottweilers, and several Jack Russells! Charles has studied, observed, and learned all the necessary characteristics to create these majestic sculptures, bringing life to each one individually, meaning no two sculptures are the same.
Most of the canine sculptures Charles creates are bespoke commissions for clients, so the range of breeds continues to grow. The creation process begins simply, with pencil to paper — this is where his ideas start to take shape. Charles hand-draws a sketch in his studio, capturing the animal’s movement, character, and lifelike qualities before establishing sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once the sketch is complete, Charles transfers it onto a large metal footplate in the studio using artists’ chalk. The chalk drawing can remain on the floor for up to a week while Charles edits, alters, and adapts it until completely satisfied.
When happy, the sculpture’s outline is hand-bent using 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, ensuring all curves are correct before welding it together to stand upright. With the bare outline standing and each leg correctly positioned, the body shape is visible at its true size.
This is a crucial moment when Charles and the team can spot any imperfections or complications the sculpture may present. Each small piece of 6mm or 8mm mild steel bar is hand-bent and cut to create muscle definition, depth, movement, and character. This is truly where the sculpture comes to life — one of the most magical parts of creating animalistic sculptures. As Charles and the team infill the body structure, limbs, facial features, and extraordinary muscle details, the movement and personality of the animal emerge, producing these one-of-a-kind pieces.
Once the main structure is complete, finer details like the tail, nose, ears, and eyes are handcrafted — sometimes using traditional blacksmithing techniques, including our 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil, adding to the magic within the sculptures. These are just some reasons why each sculpture is unique. While the rustic patina finish is available on any of our sculptures, we often prefer the luxurious hot zinc galvanised finish. This not only adds longevity with its anti-rusting properties but also gives the sculpture an added touch of quality and refinement.
