NEW Bellowing Stag Sculpture

£10,140.00

Unique, bold, and rich in rustic charm, our Horseshoe Stag Sculptures are a striking blend of rural heritage and sculptural artistry. Each stag is meticulously handcrafted at our Wolds Farm studio using individually welded, reclaimed horseshoes — giving new life to traditional materials in a truly creative form. Every detail is shaped with care, from the proud, upright stance to the commanding antlers that crown the sculpture. These powerful forms celebrate the elegance and presence of one of Britain’s most iconic woodland animals, while honouring the craftsmanship of the blacksmith’s trade.

Available in ¾ size or full-scale options, each piece is entirely unique, echoing the organic variations of the horseshoes used. Finished in a range of natural patinas — including rustic weathered tones and protective coatings — these sculptures are designed to stand the test of time in outdoor spaces. Perfect for gardens, paddocks, estates or grand entrances, the Horseshoe Stag is more than a sculpture — it’s a bold statement of tradition, character, and enduring British craftsmanship.

Horseshoe Bellowing Stag Sculpture

With blacksmithing and farriery running through Charles’s family, working with horseshoes was a natural path — combining traditional skills with creative expression. Inspired by the rich wildlife of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, where stags and deer roam freely, Charles has studied their form and presence closely to bring each sculpture to life with authenticity and character.

The creation process begins in the most traditional way — pencil to paper. Within the studio, Charles sketches each piece by hand, capturing movement, stance, and personality before defining the sculpture’s measurements and dimensions. Once satisfied, the sketch is transferred onto the studio’s large metal footplate using artists’ chalk. This outline can stay in place for up to a week, giving Charles the chance to edit and adapt until he’s completely content with the design.

The sculpture then begins to take form: 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar is hand-bent to create the outline — carefully shaped to reflect the natural curves and contours of the animal. The frame is stood up, revealing its full scale and allowing the team to evaluate and refine the form in three dimensions.

Each horseshoe — reclaimed and repurposed — is then individually cleaned, pressed, hand-bent, or cut to shape the body. From muscle definition and limb movement to facial expressions and structural flow, this is the stage where the sculpture truly comes alive. The process is detailed, intricate, and entirely handcrafted — ensuring no two sculptures are ever the same.

The final touches are nothing short of extraordinary. Antlers, ears, manes, and hooves are hand-forged using age-old blacksmithing tools — including our 1920s power hammer, the forge, and the anvil. The antlers themselves are formed from a single solid bar of steel, heated to glowing temperatures and shaped entirely by hand, creating rich textures and organic flow — a testament to Charles’s mastery of traditional techniques. Each stag or doe sculpture is not just a work of art but a story of rural heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring power of traditional skills reimagined.
