Delicate, alert, and beautifully lifelike, our Roe Deer Sculpture captures the quiet elegance of one of Britain’s most cherished woodland creatures. Hand-forged from steel at our Wolds Farm studio, each piece is crafted with meticulous attention to detail — from the slender limbs and upright ears to the gentle posture that balances stillness with subtle movement.
Available in rustic patina or galvanised finishes, it is designed to age gracefully in any natural setting. Whether positioned at the edge of a woodland garden or showcased within landscaped grounds, this sculpture stands as a subtle and soulful tribute to British wildlife and artisanal craftsmanship.
An ideal sculpture for any countryside or wildlife lover, with tones that blend seamlessly into nature to ensure harmony, making it perfectly suited for any garden or outdoor space. With stags and deer being a prolific part of the Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire wildlife, Charles has been able to study, watch, and learn all the necessary characteristics to create these stunning Stag and Doe sculptures — bringing life to each one uniquely, meaning no two are the same.
The method by which this particular sculpture is created — and indeed all our sculptures — begins with simple old-fashioned pencil to paper; this is where Charles’s ideas first come to life. A sketch is hand drawn by Charles within his studio, giving the animal movement, character, and lifelike qualities prior to establishing sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once completed, the sketch is transferred onto a very large metal footplate within the studio using artists’ chalk. The chalk sketch can remain on the floor for up to a week while Charles edits, alters, and adapts the drawing until completely satisfied. Once happy, the outline of the sculpture begins to be hand-bent using 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, ensuring all curves of the outline are perfect prior to welding and standing the piece upright.
The bare outline is then stood up, with each leg positioned correctly, allowing the full body outline to be seen at its true size. This is a crucial moment where Charles and the team assess any imperfections or challenges the sculpture might present. Each small 6mm or 8mm mild steel bar is hand-bent and cut ready to create muscle definition, depth, movement, and character. This is truly where the sculpture comes to life — one of the most magical stages in creating these animalistic pieces.
As Charles and the team begin infilling with mild steel bars, the body structure, limbs, facial features, extraordinary muscle definition, and the dynamic movement of the animal all come together, creating these one-of-a-kind sculptures. Once the main form is complete, finer details such as the antlers, tail, nose, ears, and feet are handcrafted — often using some of the oldest blacksmithing methods. Our 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil all come into play to enhance the magic within these sculptures.
The antlers, crafted from a single large piece of thick mild steel bar, are heated to an intense temperature that allows Charles to add depth, detail, and texture using just heat, the anvil, and a blacksmith’s hammer. This craftsmanship is one of the many reasons why each sculpture is unique. The sculpture then moves on to its finishing process. Creating the Rustic Patina finish requires time to develop the desired aesthetic. We use an in-house developed solution — a blend of all-natural, non-harmful products — to encourage the warm, golden orangey-brown patina, perfectly complementing the stunning locations our customers choose for these sculptures.
