Life Size Brace of Pheasants Sculpture

Being nestled in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, Charles has grown up surrounded by some of the oldest heritage countryside estates, teeming with stunning wildlife. The pheasant, one of the most prolific and historic game birds in the UK countryside, has been a frequent subject of Charles’s observation over many years.

He has masterfully captured the movement of these magnificent birds using the simplest of methods, with stunning effect. The inspiration for our Brace of Pheasants came from watching pheasants take flight from the bluebell woodlands near our studio.

Our Brace of Pheasants sculptures are handcrafted from 5mm thick mild steel, each piece shaped using hand-drawn feather outlines.
Standing between 1.8m and 2.2m tall, these life-size pheasants are truly something special.
Finished in the luxurious Rustic Patina, they perfectly complement their natural surroundings.

Life Size Flying Pheasant Sculpture

One of our simplest yet most pleasing sculptures — the Life-Size Pheasants. Although simple in form, this outstanding piece involves a complex and painstaking creation process. As with all our creations, it all begins with the classic old-fashioned pencil to paper — this is where Charles’s ideas first come to life. A sketch is hand-drawn by Charles in his studio, capturing the bird’s movement, character, and lifelike qualities before finalising sizes, measurements, and dimensions.

Once complete, the sketch is transferred again by Charles onto a large metal footplate in the studio using artists’ chalk. This chalk outline remains on the floor for up to a week, during which Charles edits, alters, and refines the drawing until he is completely satisfied. Each sculpture is crafted from 6mm thick mild steel sheet, which is carefully and meticulously cut from this flat, lifeless material. Every piece — every feather, every wingtip — is precisely cut and cold hand-bent using some of the oldest techniques, including traditional anvil and hammer work, to bring life to every detail from belly to beak.

Once all the pieces are cut and shaped, they are fettled and tidied before the careful assembly of the birds begins. Layer by layer and piece by piece, the team meticulously weld the components together until the body and wing feathers form a seamless whole. The tail and wing feathers are carefully curled and flicked with great attention to detail, capturing the fluid movement of wings in flight.

Only then can the most challenging part begin: the twisting, curving, and standing of the floating mild steel tubes onto the square base frame, ready for the birds to be attached. Heavy machinery and skilled manpower are then employed to safely lift and fix these substantial sculptures in place. Once fully assembled, the sculpture undergoes a sandblasting process to ensure a flawless finish, regardless of the chosen coating. All our sculptures are available in the luxurious rustic patina finish, which offers a stunning orangey tone, or in our hot zinc galvanised finish — prized for its anti-rusting properties and a lifelong, striking silvery-grey appearance.
