Boxing Hares Sculpture Oxidised Steel

Capturing the untamed energy and elegance of the British countryside, our Hare Sculpture is a celebration of movement, nature, and traditional craftsmanship. Hand-forged in mild steel, each sculpture reflects the alert stance and powerful limbs of this iconic animal—frozen in a moment of stillness or mid-leap. Whether displayed as a solitary feature or paired as boxing hares, it brings a sense of life and storytelling to gardens, parkland, and rural estates. Available in rustic or galvanised finishes, this sculpture is built to stand proudly for generations — a timeless tribute to wild beauty.

Rustic Patina Boxing Hares Sculpture

An ideal piece for countryside or wildlife lovers, this sculpture features earthy tones that blend seamlessly into natural surroundings, offering a harmonious presence in any garden or outdoor space. With hares and rabbits being a prolific part of the wildlife in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, Charles has spent countless hours observing, studying, and learning their movements and mannerisms. This intimate understanding allows him to capture the true essence of each animal, bringing life to every sculpture. Each piece is individually crafted, ensuring that no two are ever the same.

The process begins in the most traditional way: pencil to paper. In his studio, Charles sketches the initial concept by hand, breathing movement, personality, and lifelike character into each drawing. This sketch becomes the foundation, where sizes, measurements, and proportions are carefully determined. Once satisfied, Charles transfers the drawing onto a large steel footplate using artists’ chalk. This full-scale chalk outline may remain on the studio floor for up to a week, during which time he refines, edits, and adapts the design until it feels just right.

When the outline is finalized, the form begins to take shape. Using 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, Charles hand-bends the steel to follow the curves of the design. This bent outline is then welded together to create a freestanding base. With the basic frame upright and balanced, the true scale of the sculpture is revealed. It’s at this point that Charles and his team assess the form for any adjustments or challenges that may arise.

Next, 6mm or 8mm mild steel bars are hand-bent and cut to build out the muscle structure, depth, and movement of the animal. This is the most transformative stage—the moment when the sculpture begins to truly come to life. As the body structure is infilled with detail, the limbs, facial features, and finely sculpted muscles take shape, full of expression and energy. The final touches—tail, nose, ears, and feet—are all individually handcrafted. Traditional blacksmithing techniques come into play here, using tools like a 1920s power hammer, a forge, and an anvil to refine the character and charm of the piece.

These time-honoured methods are part of what makes every sculpture entirely unique. The final stage is finishing. To create the rustic patina, we apply our own in-house blend—a cocktail of all-natural, non-harmful ingredients—that develops into a warm, golden, orangey-brown surface. This finish enhances the sculpture’s organic appeal, allowing it to settle naturally into the beautiful outdoor settings our clients choose.
