Full of quiet strength and countryside charm, our Badger Sculpture is a heartfelt tribute to one of Britain’s most iconic woodland creatures. Hand-forged in steel at our Wolds Farm studio, each piece is crafted with care and character — capturing the distinctive stance, striped face, and sturdy build of this beloved nocturnal visitor.
Whether nestled among garden borders, woodland paths, or displayed as a standalone feature, the sculpture brings a touch of rural magic and natural presence to any outdoor space. Finished in rustic or weatherproof patinas, it is a durable and timeless piece that celebrates British wildlife and true handcrafted artistry.
An ideal sculpture for any countryside or wildlife lover, with tones that blend seamlessly into nature, making it suitable for any garden or outdoor setting. With farmland being a vast part of the Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire countryside, Charles has spent years observing and learning the essential characteristics of badgers, bringing each sculpture to life in a way that ensures no two are ever the same.
The process begins simply—old-fashioned pencil to paper—where Charles’s ideas first take shape. A sketch is hand-drawn by Charles in his studio, capturing the animal’s movement, character, and lifelike qualities before finalising sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once complete, the sketch is transferred onto a large metal footplate in the studio using artist’s chalk. This chalk outline can remain on the floor for up to a week as Charles carefully edits, alters, and refines the drawing until fully satisfied.
Once approved, the sculpture’s outline is hand-bent from 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, ensuring all curves are precise before being welded together to stand upright. The bare frame is then erected, with each leg correctly positioned, revealing the sculpture’s true size.
This is a crucial stage where Charles and the team identify any imperfections or challenges and resolve them accordingly. Each small 6mm or 8mm mild steel bar is then hand-bent and cut to create the muscle definition, depth, movement, and character of the animal. This is where the sculpture truly comes to life. As Charles and the team begin infilling the body structure, limbs, facial features, and intricate muscle details, the animal’s movement and personality emerge, resulting in a one-of-a-kind sculpture.
Once the main form is complete, finer details such as the tail, nose, eyes, and feet are handcrafted—often employing traditional blacksmithing techniques using tools like our 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil to enhance the sculpture’s magic. Finally, the finishing touches bring the sculpture to life. Applying the realistic black and white colouring typical of badgers is our favourite part, adding vibrancy and authenticity that truly makes the sculpture burst with life.
