Collonist II – Sir Winston Churchill Racehorse Sculpture

Colonist – 3/4 Life-Size Horse Sculpture

A tribute to British heritage, crafted as a sculptural masterpiece.
Inspired by Colonist II — the favourite racehorse of Winston Churchill — the Colonist sculpture stands as an emblem of strength, poise, and quiet power. Commissioned for Chartwell House by the National Trust, this three-quarter life-size sculpture has been seen by thousands of visitors, celebrating Churchill’s life, love of horses, and enduring legacy.

As with all works by Charles Elliott Sculpture, Colonist II is designed and handcrafted with an eye for both material integrity and emotional resonance, making it an extraordinary addition to private collections, architectural spaces, or heritage environments.

Life Size ‘At Full Stretch’ Racehorse Sculpture

Handcrafted in Steel and Finished for Time

Colonist is meticulously shaped by hand in steel, beginning with raw plates and bar rather than cast components. Each line, curve, and proportion has been refined through expert manipulation of heat and force — a process that allows the form to breathe, balance, and settle into its own quiet authority.

Once shaped, the sculpture is finished in a refined zinc patina, selected for its understated sophistication and remarkable durability. This finish allows the piece to mature gracefully over time, ensuring it remains visually compelling and structurally enduring for 100 years or more, whether sited indoors or within a protected garden or estate.

This refined process exemplifies the luxury craftsmanship found throughout Charles Elliott’s work — where hand-forged sculpture meets enduring material choices in both bronze and steel.

A Celebration of Place and Story

Colonist was created as part of a Christmas collaboration at Chartwell House, the much-loved home of Winston Churchill in the South East of England. The sculpture invites reflective engagement, not spectacle, aligning with the National Trust’s stewardship of this historic site and offering visitors a tactile, emotional connection to Churchill’s world.

Throughout the Christmas period, Colonist became one of the most memorable features of the house, resonating with visitors from the UK, the United States, Europe, and beyond — many of whom experienced Charles Elliott’s sculptural vision for the first time in this context of heritage and history.

Craft and Scale Beyond Expectation

Charles Elliott’s studio is known for creating large-scale sculpture that moves seamlessly between contexts — from heritage settings such as Chartwell House to private estates, museum spaces, commercial architecture, and public art installations.

His work spans bronze and oxidised steel, with finishes including polished bronze, verdigris bronze, dark traditional bronze, and the zinc finish seen on Colonist. Each material carries its own visual language, chosen for how it interacts with site, light, and landscape.

Every piece, including Colonist, is:

  • Designed for both interior and exterior environments

  • Engineered for longevity and structural integrity

  • Handcrafted in the UK and prepared for international shipping

  • Accompanied by bespoke crating and logistics support for safe transport

Available for Private Collection and Commissions

A version of the Colonist sculpture is now available for acquisition by a private collector, continuing its journey beyond Chartwell House. Alongside this, Charles Elliott Sculpture undertakes bespoke commissions for collectors, public art projects, civic spaces, estates, and architectural settings worldwide.
