Bold, intricate, and full of attitude, our Wasp Sculpture is a dramatic tribute to one of nature’s smaller but fiercely powerful creatures. Hand-forged from steel at our Wolds Farm studio, each piece captures the wasp’s sleek body, angular wings, and poised stance with striking precision—ready to take flight at any moment.
Whether mounted on a wall, nestled among plants, or featured in a wildlife-inspired collection, this sculpture injects a dynamic and unexpected energy into any space. Finished in a choice of rustic or weatherproof patinas, it perfectly blends fine detail, natural inspiration, and bold British craftsmanship.
Bugs and insects are everywhere, but our Wasp Sculpture is one of the most talked-about — originally created to help raise funds alongside Wasps Rugby Club! The creation process begins the old-fashioned way: pencil to paper. Charles hand-draws each sketch in his studio, imbuing the insect with movement, character, and lifelike qualities before defining size, measurements, and dimensions. Once the design is finalized, the sketch is transferred with artist’s chalk onto a large metal foot plate in the studio.
The chalk outline remains on the floor for up to a week as Charles refines and adjusts until completely satisfied. With the outline perfected, the team hand-bends 6mm mild steel bars to shape the wasp’s curves before welding the frame together to stand upright. Seeing the sculpture at full scale is a crucial moment, revealing any imperfections or challenges.
Then, smaller 4mm and 6mm mild steel bars are bent and cut by hand to build muscle definition, depth, movement, and character — this is where the wasp truly comes to life. As the team fills in the body, limbs, and facial features, the sculpture gains extraordinary detail and dynamic energy.
Finer touches such as the sting and eyes are crafted using some of the oldest blacksmithing techniques, including our 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil, adding a unique handcrafted magic. The finishing touches include rustic patina, galvanised, or powder-coated finishes — including the stunning gold pictured — with the full range of RAL colours available. Once complete, the Wasp is ready to take its place in the stunning homes and gardens of our customers and clients.
