Verdigris & Gold Column Bronze Sculpture

Our Sail Column Sculpture offers a striking vertical alternative to our celebrated sphere forms — a sculpture that rises rather than rests, drawing the eye upward with quiet confidence and architectural balance. Where the sphere speaks of unity and wholeness, the column introduces height, rhythm, and a sense of progression within the landscape.

Composed from individually hand-formed elements, the column may be realised in a choice of three distinct pattern languages: Sail, Oak, or Swift Bird. Each pattern brings its own character — from the flowing, wind-driven movement of the Sail, to the grounded strength of the Oak, or the lightness and motion of the Swift in flight — allowing the sculpture to respond intuitively to its setting.

Available in bronze or steel, the material further defines the sculpture’s presence. In bronze, the column is finished in a choice of Verdigris Patination, Traditional Dark Bronze, or Polished Bronze, offering tonal depth and a surface that evolves beautifully with light, weather, and time. In steel, finishes include oxidised zinc for a softened, enduring patina, or professionally applied painted steel for a more contemporary architectural expression.

This is sculpture as vertical presence — a refined, enduring form designed to complement our sphere collection while offering a commanding alternative for gardens, estates, and curated landscapes seeking height, rhythm, and lasting impact.

Stunning Verdigris & Gold Column Sculpture

Our Column Sculptures are inspired by our illustrious Verdigris & Gold Sphere sculptures. The creation process begins in the most traditional way—old-fashioned pencil to paper—where Charles brings his ideas to life. He hand-draws each sketch in his studio, carefully detailing the sphere’s design before establishing sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once Charles is satisfied with the design, “tube” style mold frames are placed onto the footplate, ready for each hand-textured sail piece to be added.

Each sail is precisely cut in a selection of sizes before being heated to extremely high temperatures. This allows the team to hand-texture each piece using our 1920s power hammer. While still glowing hot, the pieces are shaped on the anvil to achieve the desired form. They are then carefully placed around the mold, gradually forming the timeless cylindrical shape. The columns are created in two halves to ensure a perfect spherical form. Once shaped, the two halves are lifted off the mold frames and lowered for welding and infilling, joining them safely together.

Once assembly is complete and every element has been carefully checked, the column enters its final finishing phase. The entire sculpture is abrasive blasted to create a clean, uniform surface, ensuring clarity of form and consistency across all materials and finishes.

The Column Sculpture may be realised in steel or bronze, with each material offering a distinct character. In steel, finish options include a rustic patina that develops warm, expressive orange tones, hot-dip zinc galvanising for exceptional longevity and a refined silvery-grey appearance, or professionally applied painted finishes such as matte black or copper.

In bronze, each sculpture is individually finished by hand, with a choice of Verdigris Bronze, Traditional Dark Bronze, or Polished Bronze. These patinations bring depth, warmth, and a surface that responds beautifully to light and weather, developing character over time.

With a wide range of sizes, patterns, materials, and finishes available, the Column Sculpture offers a highly versatile vertical form — suited to gardens, architectural settings, and curated landscapes seeking lasting presence and refinement.

Sculpture Specification

The Column Sculpture is offered in three carefully considered scales: 200 cm height × 40 cm diameter, 320 cm height × 64 cm diameter, and 480 cm height × 96 cm diameter (approximately 79 × 16 in, 126 × 25 in, and 189 × 38 in). Each size is precisely proportioned to maintain balance and visual harmony, while introducing a distinct level of presence — from a refined vertical accent to a commanding architectural statement.

Across all scales, the integrity of the form is preserved, allowing the column to rise with clarity, rhythm, and quiet authority within its setting.

Bespoke dimensions may also be commissioned, with scale and proportion tailored to suit individual landscapes, architectural contexts, or public art environments.

The bronze is patinated using traditional hot methods, an ancient process in which heat and carefully controlled chemical solutions are used to draw colour into the surface, creating depth and meaning beyond appearance alone. Applied by hand in carefully layered stages, each patination responds to the form of the sculpture and continues to evolve over time.

Patination options include Verdigris, a traditional dark bronze, and a polished bronze surface, alongside contemporary painted patination in soft whites, refined yellows, and nuanced blues. Each surface is entirely unique, shaped by hand, material, and moment, ensuring that no two sculptures — nor any individual element within them — are ever the same, and that every work exists as a personal and singular edition.

Also available in Steel Material, with Various Finishes: oxidised steel patina, hot dipped zinc finish or professionally painted patination
