One of our most illustrious sculptures.
Available in a variety of sizes, patterns, styles, and finishes, this popular sphere is suitable for almost any garden or outdoor space. Designed and handcrafted by Charles Elliott Sculpture from mild steel, it features a luxurious progressive verdigris aged bronze exterior and a glowing gold gilt interior.
This piece is hot zinc galvanised initially to protect it from the elements and rust for over 30 years. “Each sail piece is individually textured and finished by hand with a luxurious patina,” says designer Charles. Inspired by nature, it has a weather-aged patina on the outside with a bright new gold interior. It can be used as a garden focal point or as an interior piece, scaled accordingly and even illuminated internally.
One of our most illustrious sculptures:The Sail Sphere Sculpture. The method by which these sculptures are created — and indeed how the process begins — is simple old-fashioned pencil to paper. This is where Charles’s ideas start to come to life. A sketch is hand-drawn by Charles in his studio, detailing the sphere’s design prior to establishing sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once Charles is happy with the design, the “hanging basket” style mould frames are placed onto the foot plate, ready for each hand-textured sail piece to be added.
Each sail is carefully cut in a selection of sizes before being heated to unimaginable temperatures, enabling the team to hand-texture each piece using our 1920s power hammer. The fine-tuning of each piece is then done on the anvil while still smoulderingly hot to shape as required. The pieces are then carefully placed around the mould, slowly forming the flawless spherical shape intended.
The spheres are created in two halves to ensure the perfect spherical form. The two halves are lifted off the mould frames and lowered to be welded and infilled once safely together. Once each piece is in place and the team are satisfied, the sphere is ready for the finishing process. The entire sphere undergoes a sandblasting process to ensure an immaculate final product, no matter which finish is chosen.
For all our spheres, we offer a luxurious rustic patina finish, adding a stunning orangey tone, or alternatively a hot zinc galvanised finish, providing longevity and a lifelong stunning silvery-grey effect. These spheres are also available in a selection of carefully chosen hand-painted finishes, including our traditional verdigris and gold, as well as the modern popular matte black and copper. We can even offer full powder-coated colours from the RAL colour chart should you wish to customise your finish. With the variety of options and array of sizes, patterns, and styles available, these spheres are a popular choice for almost any garden or outdoor space.
