The Perfect Sculpture for Agricultural and Countryside EnthusiastsIdeal for any agricultural setting, farmyard, or countryside garden, this sculpture exudes lifelike qualities and character — a piece admired by many and perfectly suited to your outdoor space. Charles has carefully studied and observed these majestic animals to capture their essence in each sculpture, ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same. The creation process begins with a simple, old-fashioned pencil sketch — the moment Charles’s ideas first come to life.
Hand-drawn in his studio, the sketch captures the animal’s movement, character, and lifelike qualities before sizes, measurements, and dimensions are finalized. Once complete, the sketch is transferred onto a large metal footplate in the studio using artist’s chalk. This chalk outline remains on the floor for up to a week while Charles refines, alters, and perfects the design until completely satisfied. With the design approved, the sculpture’s outline is hand-bent using 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, carefully shaping every curve before welding the framework together to stand upright.
As the bare outline takes shape with each leg correctly positioned, Charles and the team assess any imperfections or challenges the sculpture may present. Next, smaller 6mm or 8mm mild steel bars are bent and cut to create the intricate muscle definitions, depth, and movement — truly where the sculpture begins to come alive. This magical stage infills the body structure, limbs, facial features, and extraordinary muscle details, producing a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that captures the animal’s spirit.
Finer details such as the tail, horns, nostrils, and eyes are then handcrafted using traditional blacksmithing methods, including the 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil — techniques that add a distinctive, timeless quality to each piece. These meticulous steps are what make every sculpture unique. While the rustic patina finish is available on all our animal sculptures, we often prefer the luxurious hot zinc galvanised finish. This not only extends the sculpture’s longevity with superior anti-rust properties but also adds an exceptional quality and feel to the artwork.
