‘Love with the Mind’
An award-winning sculpture showcased at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Inspired by the Royal Wedding, this striking piece forms the centerpiece of a Shakespeare-themed garden, capturing the essence of a blind kiss. It beautifully embodies the timeless quote:
“Love with the mind, not with the eyes.” — Shakespeare
Crafted from gracefully curved 8mm steel rod and finished with a durable hot-dipped zinc coating, the sculpture features solid lead lips and eyes to add depth and character. Mounted on a base tank, it’s perfectly suited for integration into water features or rockeries, enhancing any garden setting with poetic charm.
Love with the MindA Thoughtful Exploration of Love and Perception by Charles ElliottExhibited at RHS Chelsea Flower ShowDelicate yet powerful, Love with the Mind is a deeply symbolic sculpture by British artist Charles Elliott, inspired by themes of romantic love, perception, and emotional connection.
First unveiled at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show within a Shakespearean-themed garden celebrating the Royal Wedding, the piece captivated audiences with its elegance and emotional depth. The sculpture draws from one of Shakespeare’s most enduring lines: “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. ” — A Midsummer Night’s Dream
At its heart, Love with the Mind depicts a blind kiss — an intimate moment of affection that transcends physical sight. The abstract faces lean close, lips nearly touching, yet the eyes are closed, rendered in solid lead, emphasizing that true love is felt rather than seen. It invites viewers to reflect on love as an emotional and intellectual connection, beyond superficial attraction. Crafted from hand-curved 8mm steel rod, the sculpture’s fluid, open structure gives it a sense of lightness despite its durable construction.
The entire piece is hot-dip galvanised, providing a silvery finish and long-lasting protection. Solid lead elements for the eyes and lips add contrast and depth, drawing the eye and lending presence to the flowing form. Mounted on a versatile base, the sculpture can stand alone or be integrated into rockeries or water features. When placed over water, the mirrored reflection enhances its ethereal quality—an ever-changing symbol of intangible love. With Love with the Mind, Charles Elliott offers a poetic meditation on love’s many dimensions—romantic, intellectual, and emotional.
Rooted in Shakespearean tradition yet crafted with a contemporary touch, it bridges past and present, art and nature, body and mind. As a Chelsea Flower Show centrepiece, it reminds us that the truest connections are felt with the heart and mind—not merely seen.
