SOLD – Commissions Welcome
Capturing the strength, elegance, and spirit of the horse, Charles Elliott Sculpture’s Equine Sculptures are a celebration of movement and majesty. Each piece is hand-forged from steel in our Hertfordshire countryside studio, using traditional blacksmithing techniques to shape fluid lines, powerful forms, and lifelike energy.
From the dynamic leap of our Grand Prix showjumper to the poised beauty of the Balanced Canter and the commanding presence of our ¾ Life-Size Rearing Horse, these sculptures honour the deep connection between human and horse. Available in a range of finishes — including rustic, galvanised, verdigris, and bronze — they are made to withstand the elements and stand proud in both rural and contemporary settings. Timeless and impactful, each sculpture is a testament to British craftsmanship and equestrian grace.
The perfect sculpture for any equine or horse enthusiast, that oozes life like qualities, character & something that can be admired by many whilst placed within your home garden space, stables or driveway, Horses & ponies have played an enormous part within Charles’s family & life due to his mother’s passion for horses alongside many years of pony club, competing & travelling alongside some very high end top class horses. Charles has been able to study, watch & learn all of the necessary characteristics to create these majestic sculptures, bring life to each one singularly meaning no two sculptures are the same.
The method in which this particular sculpture is created & for that matter even started; is simple old-fashioned pencil to paper, this is where his ideas start to come to life. A sketch will be hand drawn by Charles within his studio, giving the animal movement, character & life-like qualities prior to establishing sizes, measurements & dimensions. Once the above has been created the sketch will be transferred again by Charles on to the very large metal foot plate within the studio using artists chalk, the chalk sketch will stay on the floor for sometimes up to a week whilst Charles, edits, alters & adapts the drawing until completely happy with it.
Once happy, the outline of the sculpture will then start to be hand bent using 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, ensuring all the curves of the outline are correct prior to welding together ready to stand up. The bare line of the sculpture is then stood up, with each leg correctly in place, the body outline can then be seen in its true size. This is the crucial moment where Charles & the team will be able to see any imperfections or complications the sculpture may well throw at them along the way.
Each small 6mm or 8mm mild steel bar will be hand bent & cut ready to create the muscle definitions, the depth, the movement & the character of the animal. This is truly where the sculpture comes to life; it is one of the most magical processes when creating the animalistic sculptures. As Charles & the team start to infill using the mild steel bar the body structure, the limbs, the facial features, the extraordinary muscle definitions & the movement of the animal all start to come together creating these one-of-a-kind sculptures.
Once the above is complete, the finer details like the tail, the mane, the nose, the ears & even the eyes are handcrafted – some using some of the oldest blacksmithing methods like our 1920’s power hammer, our forge & the anvil come into play to enhance the magic within the sculptures. These are just some of the reasons why each sculpture is unique to the next. Although the rustic patina finish is available with any of our equine sculptures, we tend to lean towards the luxurious hot zinc galvanised finish, which not only adds longevity to theses sculptures with its anti rusting properties but gives the sculptures that added extra feel of quality – a finish fit for the finishing line or clear round!
