Unique, bold, and brimming with rustic charm, our Horseshoe Stag Sculptures beautifully blend rural heritage with sculptural artistry. Each stag is handcrafted from individually welded reclaimed horseshoes, making every piece a one-of-a-kind celebration of the strength and elegance of this iconic woodland creature. From the impressive antlers to the proud stance, every detail is meticulously shaped by our skilled artisans at Wolds Farm in the heart of the British countryside.
Available in both ¾ size and full-scale options, and finished with a selection of natural patinas, these sculptures create striking focal points in gardens, estates, and entranceways. A true conversation starter, they marry traditional farriery craftsmanship with contemporary rural design.
With blacksmithing and farriery deeply rooted in Charles’s family heritage, using horseshoes to create stunning sculptures was a natural choice. Inspired by the rich wildlife of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, particularly stags and deer at the heart of the landscape, Charles has studied and observed these magnificent animals closely. This deep understanding brings life and authenticity to each rugged stag and doe sculpture — making every piece truly unique. The creation process begins simply, with old-fashioned pencil to paper.
Charles hand-draws the initial sketch in his studio, capturing the animal’s movement, character, and lifelike qualities before determining sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once the design is finalized, Charles transfers the sketch onto a large metal foot plate using artist’s chalk. The chalk drawing remains on the studio floor for up to a week as Charles continually edits, refines, and perfects the outline until he is completely satisfied. When ready, the outline is hand-bent from 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, carefully shaping every curve before welding the structure together to stand upright.
With the bare outline standing, the sculpture’s true size and form become clear. This critical moment allows Charles and his team to identify and address any imperfections or challenges the sculpture may present. Next, each horseshoe is meticulously cleaned, pressed, hand-bent, and cut, preparing them to define muscle, depth, movement, and character. This stage is where the sculpture truly comes to life.
As Charles and his team begin to infill the body, limbs, facial features, and extraordinary muscle details using the horseshoes, the dynamic energy of the animal emerges — resulting in a one-of-a-kind creation. The finishing touches, such as the antlers, mane, ears, and feet, are carefully handcrafted. Some details are forged using traditional methods, including a 1920’s power hammer, the forge, and the anvil, further enhancing the sculpture’s magic. The majestic antlers are crafted from a single thick steel bar, heated to an almost indescribable temperature. Using only heat, the anvil, and a blacksmith’s hammer, Charles shapes and textures the antlers to add depth and realism. It’s this meticulous attention to detail that ensures no two sculptures are ever the same.
