Horses and ponies have played a significant role in Charles’s family and life, inspired by his mother’s passion for these majestic animals, alongside many years of pony club, competition, and traveling with top-class horses.
Charles has dedicated time to studying, observing, and understanding the essential characteristics that bring these magnificent creatures to life in his sculptures. Each creation is unique, reflecting this deep knowledge and attention to detail. The process begins simply—with pencil to paper—where Charles hand-draws a sketch in his studio, capturing the movement, character, and lifelike essence of the animal. This sketch then transfers onto a large metal foot plate, drawn in artists’ chalk, where it can remain for up to a week while Charles continually refines the design until it is perfect. Once satisfied, the sculpture’s outline is hand-bent from 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, carefully shaped to ensure every curve is accurate before welding the pieces together to stand upright. At this stage, with the bare outline standing and the legs positioned correctly, the sculpture takes on its true size.
It is here that Charles and the team spot any challenges or imperfections that might arise during creation. They then hand-bend and cut smaller 6mm or 8mm steel bars to infill the body, building muscle definition, depth, movement, and character—bringing the sculpture vividly to life. The finer details—tail, plaits, nose, ears, and eyes—are meticulously handcrafted, sometimes using traditional blacksmithing techniques like the 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil to add even more magic to the piece.
These careful methods ensure that every sculpture is truly one of a kind. While the rustic patina finish is a beautiful option, the preferred choice is often the luxurious hot zinc galvanised finish. This not only provides long-lasting protection with its anti-rusting properties but also gives the sculpture an added sense of quality—a finish worthy of crossing the finishing line or clearing the round in style!elling alongside some very high end top class horses. Charles has been able to study, watch & learn all of the necessary characteristics to create these majestic sculptures, bring life to each one singularly meaning no two sculptures are the same. The method in which this particular sculpture is created & for that matter even started; is simple old-fashioned pencil to paper, this is where his ideas start to come to life.
A sketch will be hand drawn by Charles within his studio, giving the animal movement, character & life-like qualities prior to establishing sizes, measurements & dimensions. Once the above has been created the sketch will be transferred again by Charles on to the very large metal foot plate within the studio using artists chalk, the chalk sketch will stay on the floor for sometimes up to a week whilst Charles, edits, alters & adapts the drawing until completely happy with it. Once happy, the outline of the sculpture will then start to be hand bent using 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, ensuring all the curves of the outline are correct prior to welding together ready to stand up. The bare line of the sculpture is then stood up, with each leg correctly in place, the body outline can then be seen in its true size. This is the crucial moment where Charles & the team will be able to see any imperfections or complications the sculpture may well throw at them along the way.
Each small 6mm or 8mm mild steel bar will be hand bent & cut ready to create the muscle definitions, the depth, the movement & the character of the animal. This is truly where the sculpture comes to life; it is one of the most magical processes when creating the animalistic sculptures. As Charles & the team start to infill using the mild steel bar the body structure, the limbs, the facial features, the extraordinary muscle definitions & the movement of the animal all start to come together creating these one-of-a-kind sculptures. Once the above is complete, the finer details like the tail, the plaits, the nose, the ears & even the eyes are handcrafted – some using some of the oldest blacksmithing methods like our 1920’s power hammer, our forge & the anvil come into play to enhance the magic within the sculptures.
These are just some of the reasons why each sculpture is unique to the next. Although the rustic patina finish is available with any of our equine sculptures, we tend to lean towards the luxurious hot zinc galvanised finish, which not only adds longevity to theses sculptures with its anti rusting properties but gives the sculptures that added extra feel of quality – a finish fit for the finishing line or clear round!
