The equine sculpture that not only recreates a true horse head but also oozes character and captures every visitor’s attention — yet remains subtle if you choose it to be: our Stunning Horse Head Sculpture by British sculptor Charles Elliott.
One of our favourite equine sculptures, the variety of styles and finishes we offer are endless — and they are available in a range of sizes to suit any space! Handcrafted piece by piece from mild steel moon-shaped pieces, finished in one of our favourite finishes — the Rustic Patina, which radiates nature’s colours. We then mount it onto a black or rustic steel plinth with internal illumination through the horse’s muzzle.
If you’re looking for a quality equine sculpture, then our Charles Elliott Sculpture Horse Head is for you! This particular sculpture captures the full character of these majestic animals, with an exquisite high-end feel.
The Horse Head sculpture is available in four considered sizes: 120 cm (47 in), 200 cm (79 in), 400 cm (157 in), and 600 cm (236 in). Each scale offers a distinct presence, from refined garden placement to monumental landmark installation, while preserving the integrity and balance of the form. – Bespoke dimensions and plinth heights are available upon request in stone and metals.
Equine luxury at its finest; this sculpture is not only a showstopper but it just oozes character. Transforming stable areas, courtyards, homes, gardens & driveways – it’s a real statement piece for any location. Horses & ponies have played an enormous part within Charles’s family & life due to his mother’s passion for horses alongside his own with many years of pony club, competing & travelling alongside some very high-end horses. Charles has been able to study, watch & learn all of the necessary characteristics to create these majestic sculptures, bringing life to each one singularly meaning no two sculptures are the same.
The method in which this particular sculpture is created & for that matter even started; is just simple old-fashioned pencil to paper, this is where his ideas start to come to life. A sketch will be hand drawn by Charles within his studio, giving the animal movement, character & life-like qualities prior to establishing sizes, measurements & dimensions. Once the above has been created the sketch will be transferred again by Charles on to the very large metal foot plate within the studio using artists chalk, the chalk sketch will stay on the floor for sometimes up to a week whilst Charles, edits, alters & adapts the drawing until completely happy with it.
Once happy, the outline of the sculpture will then start to be hand bent using 10mm flat mild steel bar, ensuring all the curves of the outline are correct prior to welding together creating the mold. The bare outline of the sculpture will then be infilled using more flat mild steel bar to create the depth within the horse’s cheek bones, eye structure & nasal flare.
This is the crucial moment where Charles & the team will be able to see any imperfections or complications the sculpture may well throw at them along the way. Each of the 6mm mild steel moon shaped pieces are then cut out then piece by piece & are welded in meticulously as they see correct. Each piece is so carefully placed to create the muscle definitions, the depth, the movement & the character of the horse. This is truly where the sculpture comes to life; it is one of the most magical processes when creating our animalistic sculptures. We follow this method for both sides of the horse’s head, effectively giving us two half horse head shells – almost life less until they as carefully lifted & welding into place.
Once the above is complete, the finer details like the nose, the ears & even the eyes are handcrafted with round mild steel bar – some using some of the oldest blacksmithing methods like our 1920’s power hammer, our forge & the anvil come into play to enhance the magic within the sculptures. Once all the pieces are carefully placed & the finer details are in situ, the horse head sculpture is ready for the finishing process. All of the horse head’s no matter what the end finish is will undergo a full sandblasting process to ensure a smooth immaculate finish. The beautiful timeless rustic patina is available, adding that stunning orangey toned finish, or another option is our hot zinc galvanise finished, giving not only the longevity due to the process but providing a lifelong stunning silvery grey effect.
We now even offer a hand painted option of our very popular matte black & gold finish which just gives the horse’s head an extra touch of perfection. The option of an illumination kit is highly recommended with this sculpture, which is placed secretively within the horse’s muzzle enabling it to hardly be seen during daylight hours but boasts the most wonderful illumination when lit up at night fall. The plinths available can be created in sizes to suit alongside the “standard” sizes listed above. We are also more than happy to help assist should you wish to use another material for the plinth.
