Bolting Hare Sculpture

Capturing the untamed energy and elegance of the British countryside, our Hare Sculpture is a celebration of movement, nature, and traditional craftsmanship. Hand-forged from mild steel bar, each piece reflects the alert stance and powerful limbs of this iconic animal—whether frozen in a moment of stillness or caught mid-leap. Perfect as a solitary feature or paired as boxing hares, it brings life and storytelling to gardens, parklands, and rural estates. Available in rustic or galvanised finishes, this sculpture is built to stand proudly for generations—a timeless tribute to wild beauty.

Rustic Patina Bolting Hare Sculpture

An ideal sculpture for any countryside or wildlife lover, with natural tones that blend seamlessly into the environment, making it perfect for any garden or outdoor setting. Hares and rabbits are a prolific part of the Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire wildlife, and Charles has spent time studying and observing these animals to capture their true essence. This deep understanding allows him to bring life and individuality to each hare sculpture — ensuring no two pieces are ever the same.

The creation process begins the traditional way: with simple old-fashioned pencil to paper, where Charles’s ideas first take shape. A hand-drawn sketch in his studio captures the movement, character, and lifelike qualities of the animal before determining sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once complete, the sketch is transferred by Charles onto a large metal foot plate using artists’ chalk. This chalk outline remains on the floor for up to a week, during which Charles continually edits, alters, and perfects the design until fully satisfied.

When ready, the sculpture’s outline is hand-bent from 8mm or 10mm mild steel bar, carefully shaping every curve before welding it together to stand upright. At this stage, the bare frame is stood up, legs properly positioned, allowing the full body outline to be viewed at its true size. This crucial moment enables Charles and the team to identify any imperfections or challenges that may arise.

Next, smaller 6mm or 8mm mild steel bars are hand-bent and cut to create muscle definition, depth, movement, and character. This is truly when the sculpture comes to life — as Charles and the team infill the body structure, limbs, facial features, and extraordinary muscle details, crafting each one-of-a-kind piece. The finer details — including the tail, nose, ears, and even the feet — are then handcrafted, often using some of the oldest blacksmithing techniques. Tools like the 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil add a unique magic to every sculpture.

These meticulous processes are what make each sculpture distinctly unique. Finally, the sculpture is finished with a Rustic Patina, a finish that takes time to develop the perfect warm, golden-orange-brown hues. Using an in-house blend of all-natural, non-harmful products, this finish allows the sculpture to harmoniously complement the stunning outdoor locations where it will be displayed.
