Black & Gold Horse Head Sculpture

As a testament to their enduring beauty, they are now offered in a breathtaking hand painted Matte Black & Gold patina, a finish that promises to retain its allure for a lifetime. Every stroke of the artist’s brush is infused with intention, each layer of paint meticulously applied to create a seamless fusion of deep, velvety black and radiant, lustrous gold. The interplay between these exquisite hues adds depth and dimension, elevating the sculptures to a level of captivating sophistication.

To enhance their visual impact even further, each sculpture is mounted on a sleek black steel plinth, carefully designed to provide a sturdy foundation and enhance the artwork’s presence. But it doesn’t stop there. The plinth is ingeniously equipped with internal illumination, casting a subtle and enchanting glow upon the sculptures, accentuating their intricate details and casting captivating shadows.
The Horse Head sculpture is available in four considered sizes: 120 cm (47 in), 200 cm (79 in), 400 cm (157 in), and 600 cm (236 in). Each scale offers a distinct presence, from refined garden placement to monumental landmark installation, while preserving the integrity and balance of the form. – Bespoke dimensions and plinth heights are available upon request in stone and metals.

Horse Head Sculpture - Painted, Oxidised Steel & Bronze Options

Equine luxury at its finest; this sculpture is not only a showstopper but simply oozes character. Transforming stables, courtyards, homes, gardens, and driveways — it’s a true statement piece for any location. Horses and ponies have played an enormous part in Charles’s family and life, inspired by his mother’s passion for horses alongside his own many years of pony club, competing, and travelling with some very high-end horses. Charles has been able to study, watch, and learn all the necessary characteristics to create these majestic sculptures, bringing life to each one individually — meaning no two sculptures are the same. The creation process for this sculpture — and indeed where it all begins — is simple, old-fashioned pencil to paper, where Charles’s ideas first come to life.

A sketch is hand-drawn by Charles in his studio, giving the animal movement, character, and lifelike qualities before establishing sizes, measurements, and dimensions. Once the sketch is complete, it is transferred again by Charles onto a large metal footplate in the studio using artist’s chalk. This chalk sketch remains on the floor for up to a week while Charles edits, alters, and adapts the drawing until completely satisfied. Once happy, the outline of the sculpture is hand-bent using 10mm flat mild steel bar, ensuring all the curves of the outline are precise before welding together to create the mould. The bare outline is then infilled with more flat mild steel bar to add depth to the horse’s cheekbones, eye structure, and nasal flare. This is a crucial moment where Charles and the team can identify and address any imperfections or complications that might arise.

Each of the 6mm mild steel moon-shaped pieces are then cut out and meticulously welded piece by piece as deemed appropriate. Each piece is carefully placed to create the muscle definition, depth, movement, and character of the horse. This is truly where the sculpture comes to life — one of the most magical stages in creating our animalistic sculptures. This process is repeated for both sides of the horse’s head, effectively creating two half-shells — almost lifeless until they are carefully lifted and welded into place. Once complete, finer details such as the nose, ears, and eyes are handcrafted with round mild steel bar, employing some of the oldest blacksmithing methods, including our 1920s power hammer, forge, and anvil, to enhance the magic within the sculpture.

Once all pieces and finer details are in place, the horse head sculpture is ready for finishing. Regardless of the chosen finish, each horse head undergoes a full sandblasting process to ensure a smooth, immaculate surface. The timeless rustic patina is available, providing a stunning orangey-toned finish, or alternatively, the hot zinc galvanised finish offers longevity with its anti-rusting properties and a lifelong stunning silvery-grey effect. We also offer a hand-painted option in our very popular matte black and gold finishes, adding an extra touch of perfection to the horse’s head. The option of an illumination kit is highly recommended with this sculpture.

It is discreetly placed within the horse’s muzzle, barely visible during daylight but offering a wonderful glow when lit at nightfall. Plinths can be created in sizes to suit your needs alongside the standard sizes listed above. We are more than happy to assist should you wish to use an alternative material for the plinth.
