Oxidised Steel Beech Leaf Seed Sculpture

The Seed SculptureA pure celebration of nature, inspired by the organic forms that surround us and transformed into captivating art. The creation process begins simply—with old-fashioned pencil to paper. This is where Charles’s ideas first come to life. He hand-draws detailed sketches within his studio, carefully defining the sphere’s design, size, measurements, and dimensions. Once Charles is satisfied with the design, the “hanging basket” and our custom-made tubular mold frames are placed onto the foot plate, ready for the hand-textured leaf pieces to be assembled.

Each leaf is meticulously cut in a variety of sizes before being heated to extraordinary temperatures. Using our 1920s power hammer, the team hand-textures each piece, then fine-tunes the shape on the anvil while still glowing hot. The leaf patterns are then carefully stamped into the surface. These handcrafted leaves are slowly arranged around the mold frame, gradually forming the flawless spherical shape envisioned.

The seeds themselves are created in two halves to ensure perfect symmetry. Once formed, the halves are lifted from the mold frames and carefully lowered to be welded and infilled together, creating a seamless sphere. After assembly, and once the team is completely satisfied, the sculpture undergoes a sandblasting process to achieve a pristine finish, regardless of the final surface treatment chosen. For all Seed Sculptures, we offer the luxurious rustic patina finish, imparting a rich, orangey tone, or a hot zinc galvanised finish, which provides both longevity and a stunning silvery-grey appearance. Additionally, bespoke powder coat colours from the RAL chart are available for a personalized touch.

Sculpture Specification

The Seed Sculpture is offered in three considered sizes, each carefully proportioned to preserve the integrity, balance, and organic flow of the form: 2.25 m height × 0.7 m diameter (89 in × 29 in diameter), 3.2 m height × 1.0 m diameter (126 in × 39 in diameter), and 4.8 m height × 1.5 m diameter (189 in × 59 in diameter). Each scale offers a distinct presence — from refined garden placement to bold architectural and landmark installations — while maintaining the calm, grounded character inherent to the Seed Sculpture. Bespoke sizes and proportions are also available upon request, allowing each piece to be tailored precisely to its setting and landscape context.

The sculpture may be commissioned in steel or bronze, with the choice of material and finish guided entirely by personal preference and the character of its intended setting.

In steel, finishes include a refined oxidised patina, where the surface is protected from within and allowed to develop a quiet, architectural presence through natural exposure, as well as hot-dipped zinc and professionally applied painted finishes in a considered palette of tonal, metallic, and luxury surface treatments.

In bronze, the sculpture may be finished in Verdigris Bronze, Traditional Dark Bronze, or Polished Bronze, each individually patinated and hand-finished to achieve depth, warmth, and a surface that will mature beautifully over time.
